OUR WORKDevon CAP - keeping children safe, strong and free.
The project aims to prevent bullying and verbal, physical, sexual abuse and neglect. It provides a comprehensive, community-based programme of training for school staff, parents and their children of primary age. Specially trained facilitators conduct workshops for adults and children in schools.
DEVON CAP’S PROGRAMMES
CHILDREN’S WORKSHOPS
"Your programme enhanced our own child protection training and reminded all involved that we as individuals must all take ownership of this situation and deal with it positively...I felt that the whole programme was well organized, efficiently run and took pressure off the staff involved."
Children are vulnerable because, compared to adults, they are powerless, dependent, isolated, and lack knowledge. CAP workshops focus on these issues in an appropriate, positive and empowering way. The aim of the workshops is to reduce children’s isolation and powerlessness in giving them choices.
Above all, children need to know they are a vital part of our community. All children, everywhere, need to know that it is the community's responsibility to contribute to their safety and well-being.
The workshops look at three main areas of potential assault:
Bullying An approach from a stranger Adults known to the child
Using drama, role-plays and guided group discussions, we focus on three main strategies:
Assertiveness Peer Support Talking to trusted adults
STAFF WORKSHOP
School staff are briefed in a three hour session on safeguarding and the school's roles and responsibilities; and they are given a detailed description of the children's workshop, together with a video presentation of Devon CAP at work.
"I feel that the different approach to different age groups was wonderful. Having children of different ages it made me feel more confident."
PARENT WORKSHOP
Parents are given awareness-raising information on safeguarding, in an evening presentation, emphasizing communication skills as a prevention mechanism, effective responses for handling a child in a crisis, and a community approach to children's safety. They are also given a video presentation and detailed description of the children's workshop.
"Thank you for coming in to talk to us. I feel much safer now that I know what to do."
