CAP's History

The first Child Assault Prevention project began in Colombus, Ohio in 1978.The project realized the importance of offering emotional support and empowering assault prevention information. The International Cap project is housed in Sewell New Jersey, and in the last three decades, CAP has reached 7 million children in eighteen different countries.

We know that CAP makes a difference because where resources are invested into prevention initiatives the number of children on child protection registers significantly decreases.

The Devon CAP project was formed in 1995 as an independent organisation to launch the scheme in the United Kingdom.

We operate with a small dedicated team from an office in Totnes, and in eleven years we have reached over 55,000 children throughout the South West.

The growth of Devon CAP has been extraordinary and has seen the launch and growth of Somerset Cap and Special Needs Cap. The indication is that we’ll continue to grow, and our successful model will be adopted in other parts of the country.

In Academic Year 2006/2007 we aim to recruit and train a specific team for Somerset, allowing the communities of Taunton and Yeovil to receive this vital work.

The long term goals of CAP are to establish a CAP project within every major district in the South West by 2010.
