Special Needs CAPStudies into the prevalence of maltreatment among children with disabilities in the US have found that these children are over three times more likely to experience abuse and neglect than non-disabled children. (National Working Group on Child Protection and Disability (2003) London: NSPCC. p.20)
Children are vulnerable because, compared to adults, they are powerless, dependent, isolated, and lack knowledge. Children with special needs are even more vulnerable.
CAP workshops focus on issues in an appropriate, positive and empowering way for children with disabilities. We help reduce fear and build confidence.
We want children need to know they are a vital part of our community.
All children, everywhere, need to know that it is the communitys responsibility to contribute to their safety and well-being.
In the summer 2005 CAP received funding from Children In Need so that we could pilot our Special Needs Curriculum in two special schools in Torbay. The pilot was extremely successful, with positive feedback from the children, parents and school staff.
We received a further 3 years funding from Children In Need to allow us to roll out our programme to all special schools within Devon.
To date we have worked with 14 schools in the areas of Torbay, Devon and Plymouth.
